BECOMING A MASON
You
will no doubt have many questions about freemasons and Freemasonry. The best way
to find out about Freemasonry is to talk to a mason but in the meantime this
link to the website of the United Grand Lodge of England will be a good start (click
here).
If
you don't know any Freemasons we will be happy to put you in touch with someone
from our Group with whom you can meet for a chat, see the "Contact
Us" page for
further details. You can also browse through the FAQs on the West Lancashire
Provincial Website (click
here) or the several
other informative items under the Non-Masons section.
"Will
I enjoy being a Mason?"
is one of the most common questions. Why not come along and judge for yourself?
Many lodges have informal social events to which non-masons are welcome and you
have 26 of them in this area to choose from (

)
Many
lodges host an evening called "Friends and ladies to dine". After a
normal lodge meeting, wives of members and friends of members and their wives
are invited to join us at the "Festive Board" which is a very old term
that freemasons use for the dinner after a lodge meeting. You will be warmly
welcomed and will experience at first hand the lodge and its members and often
gain some insight into some of its charitable activities.
"Is
it expensive?" The short
answer is no. There is a joining fee, which covers the regalia worn in the
lodge, subscription and administrative costs etc. The joining fee will vary
slightly from lodge to lodge but this is not enormous. There is an annual
subscription fee and there is a collection for charity (totally at your
discretion on how much you wish to donate) at each meeting. The meeting is
normally followed by a relatively inexpensive but good quality meal (Festive
Board), which costs a lot less than you’d pay in a restaurant.
"Is
it time consuming?"
Again the short answer is no. Lodges meet on average one night per month for 8
months between September and May. There are practice meetings and social
functions but you are in total control of the demands on your time. It’s just
like joining a golf club in that you may just play once a week or even once a
month, but if you really enjoy it you can play every day! The same principle
applies to Freemasonry, you can just be a member of one lodge and have very
little demands on your time or you can join other Masonic orders and increase
your commitment to suit yourself.
