FOREWORD

Welcome to the web site for the Chorley and District Masonic Group.  Freemasons have met in Chorley and District for over 200 years - the town’s first Lodge, Atholl No. 238, was founded in 1788. Sadly, Atholl Lodge is no longer with us but Ellesmere Lodge No. 730 which was founded over 150 years ago is still flourishing. Today, around 800 Freemasons meet in 26 Lodges, 7 Royal Arch Chapters and various other Masonic Orders, making Chorley one of the largest Groups in the Province of West Lancashire .

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest fraternal societies, and is based on three great principles:  Brotherly Love, Relief (Charity) and Truth.  Freemasons take the ‘serious’ side of Freemasonry seriously, but we also enjoy ourselves and aim to provide a friendly, family atmosphere for all our members. Lodges and Chapters hold a variety of social activities, together with Group events including an annual Ball, golf and bowling tournaments. There is an active and well supported Luncheon Club for retired Freemasons and the wives and widows of such Freemasons.

We are always happy to hear from anyone interested in joining, or wishing to learn more about Freemasonry in Chorley , Horwich and Westhoughton and would invite you look at our section "Becoming A Mason"

I hope that you will enjoy your visit to our website, and find what you are looking for. Our webmaster, Tony Marsden, will welcome any comments or suggestions.
